Anime Taste Testing: Koroshi Ai/Love of Kill

I probably shouldn’t have gotten my hopes up.

I don’t know why I was looking forward to this one as much as I was. Probably at least in part because it’s based on a josei manga (the most underserved demographic of the main four), although it’s been over a month since I looked up the premise, so it’s not like I had much to go on. The fact of the matter is, despite being largely inoffensive, this first episode delivered a lackluster experience. It doesn’t seem to know whether it wants to be serious or comedic and so took a swing at both; unfortunately, the main character is too dull (the classic “strong but silent” type) to be funny (aside from maybe her name – Chateau Dankworth) and too inexpert at what she does to be cool. Her male counterpart, Son Ryang-ha, is slightly more compelling, but only because he’s a total psychopath. Oh, and I’m also confused as to whether these guys are meant to be bounty hunters or assassins. My dudes, you do know that bounty hunters are generally supposed to take in their marks alive, right? ‘Cos that’s an awfully high body count you got going on there.

Score: 5/10

  1. Even though you didn’t rate this anime very high, I’m now kind of curious about this one. I think I’ll have to try it, I just won’t let my hopes get too high. Thanks for the review, your work keeps my expectations in check!

    1. You’re welcome, glad I can be of help with these quickie first impressions! And hey, you never know – just because it didn’t work for me, it may still work for others. I only judge anime based on my own preferences, not other peoples’ opinions. 🙂

  2. I was pretty fine with this episode, though I’m not that fond of the main dynamic so far (between Chateau and Son). I’m really not sure what to say about this yet; it could go anywhere, and me saying I’m fine with an episode isn’t really indicative of anything. I’ve said the same thing about the police show (or a variant of it), and then I wasn’t actually motivated to watch the second episode. Being slightly annoyed at the main dynamic might end up a bigger deal than I think right now.

    1. I wasn’t especially annoyed by the main dynamic here, just unimpressed and slightly bored. But maybe that’s my fault, given that I had possibly unfairly high expectations from the get-go. I may try another episode just to give it the benefit of the doubt, but it’d need to be a pretty phenomenal episode I think to be able to change my mind at this point.
