Your blog looks really interesting! I’m curious, how do you think the original FMA anime series compared to Brotherhood? I had mixed feelings about both; I thought the original had a darker tone and I enjoyed that, and I also thought the homunculi’s characters were handled really well, but the ending was a bit of a let down (especially the movie). Then with Brotherhood I enjoyed it most of the way through but kind of got bored towards the end :-(.

I think Brotherhood is far and away the better series of the two. I don’t think the original series is bad – far from it – but the ending was indeed a big let-down for me, and I like to pretend the movie doesn’t exist. Brotherhood on the other hand is possibly the closest to perfect I’ve ever seen an anime to be.

What’s your favorite Miyazaki film?
Although Spirited Away is undoubtedly a masterpiece, I have a soft spot for Howl’s Moving Castle, so that would be my favorite. (:

My top favourite has got to be Totoro, closely followed by Spirited Away. Howl’s Moving Castle isn’t far behind though, which I’d happily place a near third.

I like Princess Mononoke, but it’s not one of top favourite Ghibli films. I don’t really know why – it’s definitely an excellent film, but I guess it just doesn’t hit me on a really personal level like Totoro, Spirited Away, or Howl does.

Fair enough, the distinction between “Favourite” and “Best” is indeed one that’s important to remember.
I didn’t really like Spirited Away, I also didn’t think it was good, but a shallow plot fitting a children’s tale (which might be kind of fitting as it definitely has a distinct fairy tale vibe), but I am not looking to convert anyone π
I’ve really enjoyed Totoro as well.
Howl’s Moving Castle was ruined for me by having read the original book before watching the film, and just feeling it was superior in every shape and form.

I love the book Howl’s Moving Castle as well. I think both the film and the book are fabulous, but in completely different ways. I don’t even really view them as the same story, but rather two different stories with the same base storyline.

Question. Hopefully this doesn’t sound too stupid. How do you express what you like about an anime (or book/whatever)? For some reason, I’m mostly fine with expressing what I don’t like eg. annoying character traits, plot holes and stuff, but I struggle to say exactly what I enjoy about particular anime. Are there particular things you look for?

Hmm… well, I guess it differs from title to title, but generally I try to split my thoughts into two general categories. The first is what I can look at from a relatively objective angle, such as clean artwork, fluid animation, how much effort went into producing the soundtrack, etc. The second category is more personal, and deals with some of the things that stood out to me on a more subjective level. This can be anything from some of the themes from the story that resonated with me or how compelling I found the characters, to how creative I thought the plot was and how effectively I thought the atmosphere was conveyed. What I really look for in any given anime depends on a lot of things including the genre and demographic (it would, for example, be silly of me to expect action and adventure from a romantic comedy), so on the whole I try to judge things based on what I can reasonably assume is the norm. From there, everything that struck me as above average are the things I single out to comment on as far as the positive aspects are concerned.

OK. I guess it’s a bit like my music reviewing, by looking at the anime both objectively and subjectively. Just harder ^^. Thanks for putting some thought into your answer. I reckon if I start thinking about those things when I watch anime, I should be able to improve.

You seem to like the more thoughtful kind of anime, those with atmosphere and character.
I wonder if you have seen Haibane Renmei? It won’t appeal to everyone, but if you are one of those it does speak to . . .
If you haven’t seen it, may I recommend the following course of actions?
-Do not Google it.
-Do not read any reviews or anything about it.
-Put thoughts of genre and character types to one side.
I am not saying anything else.

Upcoming, well you mentioned something about original animes, I’m the campaign manager of one that is actually headed to Kickstarter but the studio head does have bigger plans for the future of the show. It’s something he’s been working on for over 2 years.

I found your blog while doing a search for women anime artists and found your article about women who have directed anime productions. Very nice, thank you for the homework! I recently became interested in anime after stumbling across Project A-ko on youtube. I never knew that anime was more than just teenage boys fighting in giant robots to save the day and impress the girl. Project A-ko just blew away that misconception of mine. Plus, I found it to be hilarious! After I read some reviews/history on Project A-ko, I understood better what the producers were trying to achieve and found the show even funnier on the second watching, since now I get the jokes better. My face was hurting from laughing so much! So, now I have a particular interest in animes that feature women/girls as main characters who are out on zany adventures, like with A-ko and B-ko fighting over the friendship of C-ko. Who ever writes stories about girls fighting over the friendship of another girl? They did and it was hilarious!
