The time has come again – one year and six anime titles later and it’s time to wrap up the (retro) Watson Watches series. In this final post of the project, we look back on the shows I forced requested Watson to take a look at, and hopefully come to a few general conclusions based on his experiences. As a quick reminder, here are the specific shows I chose for Watson over the course of these articles, starting from the late 90s and working our way backwards: Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Sailor Moon, Ranma ½, Dragon Ball, and Rose of Versailles. Watson Watches: Neon Genesis Evangelion
Welcome to the second article of Watson Watches (the Retro Edition). As a quick introduction to anyone who may be reading this series for the first time, this is the follow-up series to a bunch of interview-style articles published back in 2014. The idea was to introduce Watson – who knew very little about anime at the time and had seen only bits and pieces of a couple of shows in passing – to some specific titles and then ask him some hopefully interesting questions about them. This current series is the same kind of thing, only all the anime I’ll be getting Watson to watch have one thing in common; they were all released before 2000.
Just for fun, we’re also going in reverse chronological order. Previously we tackled the 1998 show Cowboy Bebop, and this week we’re going with the show that absolutely nobody (but nobody) saw coming: 1995’s Neon Genesis Evangelion. Art Imitating Life: Anime Pilgrimages Around Japan (Part 3 of 3)
This three-part series about anime-based tourism is a collaborative effort between Artemis of Otaku Lounge and Buri-chan of San’in Monogatari. Artemis currently resides in Ehime Prefecture and since she likes to travel a lot, often discovers that she makes anime pilgrimages entirely by accident. She mostly writes about anime, with the occasional foray into Japanese music, street fashion, and general culture. Buri-chan originally became interested in Japan by watching the Odaiba episodes of Digimon Adventure, and already made that pilgrimage long ago. She currently resides in Shimane Prefecture and writes about Japan’s San’in region, including writing manga to introduce local Kojiki mythology. Evangelion 3.0: What the (Actual) Fuck
First of all, a knee-jerk reaction post this is not. I have intentionally held off on writing a review of the third Evangelion Rebuild film for a while because although it made me angry, frustrated, and a whole lot of other things involving somewhat less polite language, an ill-considered and irrational rant was exactly what I didn’t want. The whole Evangelion franchise has and probably always will be one that provokes strong emotional responses from its viewers, but my aim here is to approach things as reasonably as possible. (For the record, I love the original television anime series. I had no issue whatsoever with the TV version ending when I first watched it, and I still don’t today. The two original Evangelion films – Death and Rebirth and The End of Evangelion – seem totally unnecessarily and completely inferior by comparison, but I recognise that this is a matter of personal opinion. On the other hand, I did enjoy the first two Rebuild films quite a bit, although nothing will ever replace the series for me.)
