Welcome to the fifth year running of the AAA; the one-woman award ceremony where the dress code doesn’t matter and the results are clearly 100% objective/the pinnacle of fine taste. Continue reading “AAA2017: The Artemis Anime Awards”

5 Good Anime Over 60 Episodes
I’ve made no secret of the fact that, more often than not, I dislike long anime shows. No doubt I’ve grown far pickier since I first started watching (back when I was happy to sit through some outright bad shows just because they were better than nothing at all). If I’m being honest though, I never had much patience for things like long-winded exposition, constant flashback scenes, and other assorted filler tricks to begin with. Neither does it help that I’m too easily irritated by wildly inconsistent production values; another fairly typical hallmark of longer anime titles.
Sometimes though, a long-running anime comes along that surprises me. Sometimes I’m taken aback by just how high-quality a 60+ episode title can be. Sometimes even I have to admit that, for all I can be extremely impatient, a few shows really are worth investing that much time (and yes, emotional commitment) into. Below are what I still consider now to be the absolute best of these. Continue reading “5 Good Anime Over 60 Episodes”
Anime Taste Testing: Spring 2017 (Part II)
I wouldn’t go so far as to say that this is the worst anime season in recent history, but it’s certainly the season in which I’m watching the least amount of titles over the past several years. That’s not necessarily a complaint by the way, and I should also point out that given my current work schedule, I’ve had to be even stricter than usual about how many shows I’m willing to keep. Still, I do find it interesting that of the four lonely anime left on my weekly watch-list, only one of them isn’t a sequel. Continue reading “Anime Taste Testing: Spring 2017 (Part II)”
Anime Taste Testing: Spring 2017
Apologies for being a bit later than usual with this. Still trying to figure out life and stuff. And also my wifi, Because Japan. As usual, the following opinions are based purely on the first episode of each show and are ranked from worst to best. Continue reading “Anime Taste Testing: Spring 2017”
AAA2016: The Artemis Anime Awards
Yes, it’s back for the fourth year running – the awards that are 100% objective and clearly the only ones in the anime industry with any relevance. Continue reading “AAA2016: The Artemis Anime Awards”
Top 5 Feel-Good Anime
One of the reasons I love anime so much is the sheer variety. Whether I’m in the mood for an epic fantasy, a dramatic space opera, or a just a good ol’ romantic comedy, I can usually find something I like. Sometimes though, when I come home from a too-long day at work or need to chill because I’m stressed or upset, I’m after nothing more than calm and soothing – something to convince me, at least for a little while, that the world is actually a nice place where things inevitably work out for the best. Anime Taste Testing: Fall 2016 (Part III)
Well, here we are again already, just about at this season’s halfway point. And a very interesting season it is too – although that hasn’t stopped me dropping more shows than I’ve kept. Occultic;Nine, Magic-Kyun! Renaissance, Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru, Watashi ga Motete Dousunda/Kiss Him, Not Me, Trickster: Edogawa Ranpo “Shounen Tanteidan” yori, and WWW.Working!! all got the chop after only one episode, but that didn’t prevent a second round of cuts and there’s still the possibility of more to go. Let’s see how those left have been faring. Continue reading “Anime Taste Testing: Fall 2016 (Part III)”
Anime Taste Testing: Fall 2016 (Part I)
I’d normally do all of these in one shot, but with 16 shows on my to-watch list and all of them so far giving me a decent amount to say, I thought I’d break it up into two separate posts for a change. When it comes time for my usual mid-season thoughts post, I’ll go ahead and combine them again. First aired first serve, so this one features the following titles: Izetta, WWW.Working!!, Magic-Kyun! Rennaissance, Touken Ranbu, Trickster, Natsume Yuujinchou, Nanbaka, and Yuri!!! On Ice. Continue reading “Anime Taste Testing: Fall 2016 (Part I)”
5 Great Anime Mascot Characters
Sometimes it really feels like anime has more mascot characters than you can shake a stick at. Even discounting those shows that are basically made up of mascot-friendly characters like Pokemon and Digimon, it seems that a huge number of titles – old and new, comedic and serious alike – find the time to utilise cute animals or other forms of chirpy critters in all manner of ways. Continue reading “5 Great Anime Mascot Characters”
Anime Taste Testing: Winter 2013/14 (Part II)
I stand by what I said in my first part of this post a few weeks ago – it’s hardly the best season of the anime year, but it’s a very consistent one. I think I actually prefer this to seasons that do contain that groundbreaking title but which have me dropping over half the shows I originally sample. To me, it makes for a more satisfying viewing experience overall. Continue reading “Anime Taste Testing: Winter 2013/14 (Part II)”
