Sequels, even the decent ones, are very rarely as good as the original. This seems to be the general rule of thumb for most forms of fictional media, anime included, and although there are a number of decent-to-great anime reboots that help balance the scale a little (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Hellsing Ultimate, Kuroshitsuji: Book of Circus, and this season’s Fruits Basket, to name just a few examples), the fact remains that second (and third, and fourth, and fifth…) seasons of anime typically just aren’t as inspired as their original counterparts. AAA2016: The Artemis Anime Awards
Yes, it’s back for the fourth year running – the awards that are 100% objective and clearly the only ones in the anime industry with any relevance. Continue reading “AAA2016: The Artemis Anime Awards”
Watson Watches: retro wrap-up party
The time has come again – one year and six anime titles later and it’s time to wrap up the (retro) Watson Watches series. In this final post of the project, we look back on the shows I forced requested Watson to take a look at, and hopefully come to a few general conclusions based on his experiences. As a quick reminder, here are the specific shows I chose for Watson over the course of these articles, starting from the late 90s and working our way backwards: Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Sailor Moon, Ranma ½, Dragon Ball, and Rose of Versailles. Anime Taste Testing: Spring 2016 (Part II)
I know I say every season that I plan on being ruthless and dropping a lot if shows fail to impress me, but I guess I must have really meant it this time because holy crap I’ve dropped a ton. Fifteen shows originally went in to my weekly watch-list trials. Only five of them are still around. Ouch. Continue reading “Anime Taste Testing: Spring 2016 (Part II)”
Watson Watches: Sailor Moon
Welcome to the third article of Watson Watches (the Retro Edition). As a brief intro to anyone reading this series for the first time, this is actually the follow-up to a bunch of interview-style articles published in 2014. The idea was to introduce Watson – who at that time knew almost nothing about anime and had never watched it himself – to some specific titles and then ask him some hopefully interesting questions about them. This current series is basically the same thing but with one unifying factor: all the anime I’ll be getting Watson to watch were released before 2000.
Just for fun, we’re also going in reverse chronological order. Previously we tackled the 1995 landmark show Evangelion, and this week we’re going with another hugely popular title that even non-anime fans have probably at least heard of: 1992’s Sailor Moon. As usual, Watson watched everything on his own and was told not to look up anything online beforehand. The following questions were given to him afterwards. (Note that as Sailor Moon contains a ton of filler, we ended up agreeing that he watch the episodes introducing each of the main characters – for reference, that’s episode 1, 8, 10, 25, 33, and 34 of the original Japanese version.) Anime Taste Testing: Spring 2016
And with barely a break in the proceedings (or actually, not any break at all), the spring anime are out of the gate. I’ve got precious little time up my sleeve this season and am feeling the need to be ruthless, so don’t be surprised to see plenty of titles being dropped between now and the next couple of weeks. In fact, let’s get started on that right now, shall we? Continue reading “Anime Taste Testing: Spring 2016”
A History of Anime: The Super Abbreviated Version – part 3 of 4 (1990-1999)
Where we last left off in the previous exciting episode of this (mini)series, the anime industry was actually dying (as opposed to, you know, whatever people are saying about anime now), and Japan as a whole sure wasn’t look too healthy either. Anime needed a hero. A hero fresh from the fight… Continue reading “A History of Anime: The Super Abbreviated Version – part 3 of 4 (1990-1999)”
Anime Taste Testing: Winter 2015
Is it just me, or is the amount of fanservice-laden anime about cutesy girls doing cutesy things particularly rampant this season? I don’t altogether mind – I welcome the chance to catch up on my somehow ever-increasing list of older titles – but it does certainly limit the number of winter shows on my watch-list. Continue reading “Anime Taste Testing: Winter 2015”
Anime Taste Testing: Summer 2014 (Part II)
Welp, already around the halfway point for most of these titles? Time really flies when you’re having fun following way too many shows for comfort. Nonetheless, I’m pretty satisfied with the line-up I now have – and if I’m still slightly unsure about a couple of them, the fact that all but two of these anime are set to be 12 episodes or less makes things a lot easier to juggle. (For people reading this who don’t know which anime I picked up to begin with, you can check out part one of this post here.) Continue reading “Anime Taste Testing: Summer 2014 (Part II)”
Anime Taste Testing: Summer 2014
Ladies and gentlemen, summer is officially upon us. RUN, DON’T WALK. (Actually, you should probably walk because it’s really damn hot out there.) But the point is, summer has finally made it and apart from the arrival of all the fun things about the season you all know and love, like gross insects and back sweat, there’s also a whooole lot of new anime I’ve got on my to-watch list. Significantly more than in any other season to date, in fact – in part because there are so many sequels/remakes that I’m actually watching for a change, and in part because there’s a far larger spread of female-targeted titles than normal.
